I'm guessing this is a browser settings issue, but it could well be a Windows XP issue... who knows? Browser is IE6.

I like to save NASA images just for personal viewing. Routinely, I've right-clicked on the images (identified on the download sites as jpegs), and saved them as jpegs with no problem.

Tonight, right-clicking on known jpegs started giving me only a "save-as bitmap" option... and constantly defaulting to My Pictures, which I also don't remember happening before. It will occasionally recognize a jpeg as a jpeg, but most jpegs when right-clicked are being considered bmps.

I think it must be one of those settings that the browser remembers from the last time it happened (like the size of the browser window when you close it), but I'm not sure.

Anyone have an idea what's going on and how to change it back?

I think to recall that it has something to do with the cache of IE beiing full, try emptying it and increase its size:

tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings

Hope this helps

Leo - Thanks... That solved the bmp problem. I've run into other full cache problems with Internet Explorer over the years, but that's the strangest one I've seen.

Any way to change the defaulting to My Pictures for the image save directory?

Hi,

Check this article on tweaks and see if it helps you out.

You can also use Xsetup (I believe) to change/map those defaults.

Here's another interesting exchange on this subject:
