Accessibility & Aural Stylesheets

Trying to get up to speed on 508 accessibility & CSS

I have been trying to get up to speed on implementing 508 accessibility in conjunction with using CSS.

I have been studying this topic all day and have read several excellent threads here at WW including:

Making your Site Accessibile [webmasterworld.com] (2003)
Moving towards an accessible site [webmasterworld.com] (2002)

I was wondering if someone could address the ability to "write/design" for screen readers using CSS. From reading these threads, it appears that the readers aren't advanced enough to implement aural stylesheets. Is this still the case?

Are there newer reference sources than those cited in the those threads?

Any direction would be appreciated!

As far as I know this is still the case.

What would be ideal is a FOSS screenreader with the same standards push behind it that a project like Gecko has. As far as I know there isn't much movement in this area though.
