I read the directions on Lynx's home page, and to be honest, got really really scared/intimidated. I have Mac OS 10.3 and OS 9.2. What must I do (in non-geek terms) to get it started?

The easiest way is to install fink [fink.sourceforge.net]. Then you can just type in the Terminal:
fink install lynx

lynx probably doesn't have anything to do with the open source project for os x
