Little icon associated with web site

how do they do that?

When I visit certain web sites an icon is displayed in the address bar. How can I do the same with my site?

Try a search here or on Google on "favicon" for details.

That's the favicon.ico file. There used to be a site favicon.com that had a good explanation about how to set one up. Or you could search WebmasterWorld for favicon.ico [google.com] to find a number of threads on the topic.
