Trying to install multiple versions of Internet Explorer for testing

I apologize in advance for the long post! :)

I am trying to install multiple versions of IE on my PC for testing CSS. I read the posts to this group months ago that covered this in great detail - by DrDoc and Jobarr. I currently have IE 6.0 and would also like 5.5 and 5.0.

The thread describes only installing a section of the files and creating a local file so that it goes to the folder you created: [webmasterworld.com ] I realize many believe it's not possible and that the best bet is to partition the hard drive, e.g. [thesitewizard.com ]

I posted about a week ago but haven't been able to resolve the problem so I thought I would repost and try to make it more clear what I was trying to do.

The problem is that I get it to work but not perfectly. I was really hoping for some suggestions from any of you who’ve managed to get it working. I’d greatly appreciate any help!

The following details what I did and where it fails. I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 2.

1. Went to browsers.evolt.org and downloaded ie501sp2.exe (I didn't do anything with ie501sp2_nt.zip because it seemed to be a subset of the full exe.)

2. ran the exe and it created IE5.01 SP Full

3. Extracted the following to a new folder IE5.01
IENT_S1.CAB --> IENT_1.CAB
IENT_S2.CAB --> IENT_2.CAB
IENT_S3.CAB --> IENT_3.CAB
IENT_S4.CAB --> IENT_4.CAB

4. Extracted the files from IENT_1.CAB, IENT_2.CAB, IENT_3.CAB, IENT_4.CAB in that order. I didn't need to overwrite anything.

5. Deleted SHLWAPI.DLL (I didn't have COMCTL32.DLL).

6. Created blank text file iexplore.exe.local (no .txt extension).

When I try to run IEXPLORE.EXE, it starts to run and then stops. When I look at it in Task Manager, nothing pops up in Applications, though in Processes, dwwin.exe and IEXPLORE.EXE do pop up and never go away (in spite of the application never running.)

Then I can't run anything (e.g. Control Panel, IE 6.0, etc.) on the machine. When I go to restart, it tells me that the Save.exe process needs to be shut down. I restart and everything works (except, of course, the IE5.01 I can't get to run.)

I have also tried the following to partial success:

All of the steps 1-6 above except in step 4 I only extracted IENT_1.CAB (not the other 3) though they were all 4 in the new folder. When I do this I CAN actually run iexplore.exe, links work, and the address bar works but I can't type in any forms.

if you solve this, let me know, i would be interested in doing this. Have you considered creating multiple users in windows. For example user:IE5, IE5.5, and IE6.0 then installing the corresponding browser for each?

If you're running XP someone has already done the hard work for you.

You can download the files already prepared for XP. Just copy them to your computer, extract from the ZIP and execute (no installation required).

Not entirely sure on the TOS for URLs, so do a google search for "quirksmode multiple explorers"

I have IE3 -> IE6 running on my machine without any problems.

Happy testing...

Super! Thanks, mrobinson. I went to [quirksmode.org...] and got it working for 5.0 and 5.5 no problem. It's a great site with a script to easily determine which version of IE you're working in (after you download and unzip the corresponding versions.) It also has a rundown of the things that won't work properly (like favorites.)

Yes, that's the one!

I'm glad it worked out for you - a very handy resource.
