Are there any alternatives to gotomypc.com? Hopefully something free or inexpensive. Thanks.

Not a web service, but if you're able to download the client software on any remote computer that you will be using then have a look at "Real VNC". It's free, and open-source.

Backing up dmorison, the VNC family is excellent. We use "UltraVNC" at the office (from sourceforge.net) where it replaced GoToMyPC and Timbuktu. I've also used Laplink and PCAnywhere, and the VNC product blows them away. Using a variety of clients (ThinVNC, Linux' VNC Viewer, UltraVNC Client, etc.), our users have no trouble connecting to and managing their machines remotely.

I was just looking at this VNC thing. It looks soooo complicated! Anything easier maybe? One of the problems I have is that I have a dynamically assigned IP address for the PC I want to access remotely.

The GoToMyPC service does cost money, but it's dead simple to get up and running. I've been using it for years to get through an incredibly strict corporate firewall. Inside the firewall I use UltraVNC which is my favorite of the VNC family. The problem you'll run into with the free VNC options is usually a much more complicated setup. If you want to securely tunnel your VNC connection you're going to have to hit the books a bit.

how about TightVNC? Is it better than UltraVNC? UltraVNC website doesn't have much content.

ngentot, I know it looks a bit complicated, and, this is from someone who hasn't tried it, BUT, I've looked at a few and if you go to the UltraVNC site, they shunt you off to another site which has a *really* good install guide which is *really* simple - looks like a breeze.

BTW, UltraVNC got really high scores/praise from users of this genre of software on one forum I was reading recently.

Try BeInSync.
This client is now offered as a free beta version, I've used it and it seems to be a good alternative, Also goes through NAT.

I just installed UltraVNC and it works wonderfully. In fact, I'm posting this message from my PC at home that I access remotely from work with UltraVNC. It's really cool.

But I notice that UltraVNC applet viewer is slower than the commercial VNC that I also try out called I'm in Touch. They seem to have a faster refresh rate than UltraVNC.

Is there any way I can make my UltraVNC applet viewer work faster? Also, the scrolling wheel is not working on UltraVNC.

Thanks.
