images/spacer.gif - should I put keywords in the alt attributes?

If you add an Alt tag to the spacer images will the search engines frown upon that. I'm not talking about a whole bunch on a page. Just maybe 5 or 6 along with the regular images on the page.

I wouldn't do it. It serves no purpose.

It's spamming, whatever way you look at it.

Will it help? - Probably not.
Would you be penalized? - Are you feeling lucky?
Would your site pass a manual check with it in place? - Not a hope.
