Fixed or floating pages

Do we still design around 800x600?

I tend to create websites which are fixed at 700-750 pixels across on a fixed width sub-page if you like rather than expanding pages.

Back in 2000 I was told that all corporate sites used this method and to be honest I haven't gotten out of the habit (just like the smoking!).

I realise that nowadays 800x600 isn't the popular dimensions (if that is good English!) and am considering updating myself to the current way of thinking!

My question is, do you believe that we should utilise the auto expanding webpages instead of the fixed width concept and should we really be treating our 1024 width visitors as the norm nowadays!

Best regards
Shady!

I like auto expanding, but don't use it much (Still at 800x600).

It may not be the MOST popular but it is still very common according to my web site's logs.

Sadly I do not monitor monitor settings any more! What kind of percentages are you showing for the 800x600 compared to 1024x768?

I have to back up and say that I've stoped logging monitors and colors as of the new year. (Different logging system.)

But if I remeber correctly, about 60% were 1024 about 30% were 800 and the other ten were a mixed bag of oversized, mac sizes and 640.

I doubt this changed much in six months. Maybe by this time next year, though! But then again, this is MY visitors for ONE industry.

1024x768 - 59.92%
800x600 - 37.02%

Hope this helps!

Here's another thread that recently discussed this.

It all depends on your layout and readability.

Interesting stats robotsdobetter! I must admit I would have expected 800x600 to be far lower than that!

It's like that on my other sites too, well close anyway.
