Page file size -- total of all needed files

How can I see the weight of a page?

Is there a way I can see a page's total filesize properties, including images etc, without having to add it all up manually?
Thanks

Hi smokeyb,

If the site isn't yours it's a little tricky. You need to save the page including all images and then grab any CSS and JS files. The total will give you the page size.

One caveat, if the site is using rollovers or the CSS is referencing images, they will not be brought over with the Save As. You need to manually grab them.

If you have direct access to the site's files, just grab all the sizes and add them up (HTML, CSS, JS & images). Don't forget that if the site is using server side code, you do not count this in the file size. Only used the compiled page that the browser renders.

Hi smokeyb,

netmechanic provides a service that can do a load time checker of each object on your page!

Thanks for all the help guys.
I presume AF, that you were referring to HTML toolbox from netmechanic. Is that true what the company said: "If a page doesn't load in 8 seconds you lose 1/3 of your visitors"?! Now I think about it... is that a long time in web terms?

Hi smokeyb,

>>HTML toolbox from netmechanic
Yes that's the one!

>>If a page doesn't load in 8 seconds you lose 1/3 of your visitors"?!
Again yes it not perhaps a little less! It should test in each connection type i.e. dial up 33kbps (not often used thesedays) and higher.

The SEW link whilst it works doesn't do the job in the way I suspect you are looking for ( sorry Brett ).

I just gave it one of my homepages which has images delivered by script (to protect them ) ..the "tool" reads the page size as just under 11k ..which is true for the pure html ..
However the ccs sheet is another 8 k
the java "control file" is another 11k
the images total 72k ....
and because the "tool" doesn't read java it says there are no images on page ....without them there is no real content as it is an artwork site with 11 images on the index page as jpegs plus 17 gifs ...

I'm not sure about netmechanic, but many page size checkers do not look at your CSS for images linked from there which means they don't get counted in the final size total.

One to watch for...

Hang on a minute... 72k at let's say 4kb a sec, equals 18 seconds. This is not meant as a criticism Leosghost
as my page weighs in at 52kb. I always thought that 50kb was still in the "sweet spot", but after doing the math I'm not so sure. What do you all consider the best page filesize to be? I'm sorry that I didn't post this as an individual topic now, but I'm still interested to know what everyone's pages weigh in at?
Thanks again all

Less than 30Kb is the magic number for me.

People coming into an "artwork" site tend to know from the serps or whatever what they are coming into and therefore expect pictures and consequently longer download times .....
If they dont like it ....
it also depends on the way you design ...

if your page takes three or four full scrolls to get to the bottom ..and the top area is interesting enough ..most people dont read fast enough to notice that its not all there yet before it all gets there ..if you see what I mean ..
I do have other sites where the entire entry page is only around 15k and still others with 35k including one image and an entry link ( I can hear them now "*ù*$^*ù*^splash pages!" works tho : ) ...horses for courses ...and SEO ...
fastest page I know of around here belongs to bcolflesh ....loads so fast its scary! ; )
