Where are the specs?

I may be overlooking the obvious....

How can I find the specifications for various DOCTYPES from the home page of the W3C? I know that people have deep-linked to them in threads here, but I can't seem to find them going through the home page.

Thanks.

All the markup specifications live off the link below - scroll down, click the one you want, scroll down to the table of contents and you'll find more specification information than you could shake a stick at (or possibly ever need).

[w3.org...]

Easiest way to find doctype info is to look at the "Document Type Definition" topics.

Thanks--I found that bit, but what I'm looking for specifically is the detailed info on tags and elements (more specifically, for XHTML 1.1), what's deprecated, does a float require a width, that sort of thing.

Am I making any sense?

The markup page linked to above takes you directly to those pages. However, whether that's useful or not depends on how fluent you are in reading DTDs.

Try:

[w3.org ]

which lists each element of each module with links.

I think what photon is asking for is something more like this:
[w3.org...]

...but for each doctype.

DrDoc--

That's very nearly it. Using your link I found this: [w3.org...] which is exactly the type of page I'm looking for, except for XHTML 1.1. Parsing that URL I found that the HTML 4.01 link can be reached through the "Technical Reports" link on the home page, though it's not immediately obvious (at least, not to me). :)

But I'm still not finding the equivalent XHTML 1.1 page. I keep running into XHTML™ 1.1 - Module-based XHTML [w3.org], but it doesn't discuss tags at all.

I have a great talent for overlooking what's right in front of me, but I don't think I'm being too blatantly dense this time--I hope.

Side note: "XHTML" is trademarked?!?

"XHTML" is trademarked?!?

Presumably to make sure no one else trademarks it. A useful precaution in this day and age.

So can anyone point me in the direction DrDoc mentions in msg #6?

One last attempt. See above message.

I can't find anything, except this one: [w3.org...]
Which in turn takes me to: [w3.org...]

I've been looking too, and can't find anything better. I think the W3C could do a bit more in this area and help the web in general. It's a reasonable request.

Okay, thanks for checking. I was assuming that I was overlooking something (I have a great talent for that). But if you two gurus can't find it, then I know it wasn't just me.

Thanks again.

Just to show we're not alone in our frustrations with the w3 site:

Trying to find specific answers to specific questions about web standards in that heap of a web site is nearly a huge waste of time .

As for the W3C web site - it is a mess. I can’t find anything and I work there. My eyes bleed when I look at some of the pages.
