America Online confirmed to the INQUIRER that it is working on an updated release of the Netscape browser.

To be based on Mozilla, of course.

I am one of those people who can see no sense in having something which actually is a bloated, one generation older version of Mozilla. But from a more philosophical view it IS interesting that AOL do not seem to be willing to yield to Microsoft.

I know what you mean. However many people find the brandname Netscape more reliable than Mozilla. There even are people who have never heard of Mozilla ;) Version 7.2 will not be the latest greatest, but should be better than 7.1.

Personally, I'm not keen on the Mozilla Suite (on which Netscape is based); I prefer Firefox and other lightweight Gecko browsers. But even taking into account "old browser bloat syndrome", a new release should be able to incorporate updates and bugfixes to the core rendering engine.

Don't you wish the the ever-popular Internet Explorer's rendering and JS engines were updated more than thrice a decade?

Well, if we're talking wishes, I wish IE and the whole lot of them would be updated once to be fully compliant with the latest standards and then left alone until a new standard takes over. If the new standard is sufficiently novel, a new product would be released.
