Validation of select box

One step away from validations but the following is baffling me. Any pointers?

<option value="any" selected>Some label</option>

is causing this

Line 168, column 29: the name and VI delimiter can be omitted from an attribute specification only if SHORTTAG YES is specified

<option value="any" selected>Any Resource Type</option>

with the bold being where the arrow would point to.

Just use selected="selected", checked="checked",or multiple="multiple" and it should validate.
