How many web sites are there on the internet?

Anyone know? Google has announced recently that is has 4 billion web pages, but what about web sites?

I have heard that their is an estimated 10billion web pages online. Not sure if there is a way of finding the number of websites online though.

Can we even define what "website" means in a strict enough way to find an answer? I work with several "sites" that seamlessly use several different domain names, even top level domains. The user would call them one "website".

We might ask "How many active top level domains are there that serve unique content?" -- and then we still run into the question of how to detect duplicate content.

due to the amount of websites being created every second it is most likely impossible to know exactly how many websites there are on the internet, since if anyone ever bothered to count...by the time they write down the number half a million will have been deleted or created.

I found a website that says it tracks gTLD

They say they only update their website every so often but they can be contacted to get the latest numbers.

an actuate forum
a band director forum
another band director forum
cnn.com
pcpitstop.com
several of my own sites
frontpage magazine
google
yahoo

plus an occasional one I find for my kids school work and an occasional shopping jaunt to lands end.

But that's about it. So, for the beelions and beelions of available sites, I just have my few.
