and creating links to a "search" site

When I open my index page in IE, some of the terms are becoming hyperlinks to the runsearch engine. It does it to certain keywords on my site. I am sure this is spyware or a virus but I wonder if there is anything I can do in my html to stop this so I don't lose my visitors to such spam?

Unfortunately I do believe there is nothing that you can do. You can protect yourself by downloading a program like AdAware and removing the nasty little critters from your system. Be sure to download the latest reference file before scanning your system. Yes, there is a free version.

And keep IE patched. Use Windows Update!

There really isn't anything to do in your HTML that can protect your pages against adware intrusion, because people have chosen (knowingly or unknowingly) to install an adware application - and that installation is their responsibility on their operating system.

If you have an idea about what keywords various programs are targeting, you might perhaps obscure those words on your page, using your technology of choice. However, that step would probably also affect your own search engine rank for those words, so it's a touchy thing.
