address bar searching with internet explorer 6.0

My internet explorer used to be able to perform a search directly from the address window...when I typed a word like "asdf" in the address window...it would either go directly to "www.asdf.com" if that site existed or it would open up a search listing all the possible sites using MSN explorer. For example if I typed "google" it would go to www.google.com...or if i typed something vague like "fly fishing" i would get a MSN search results for fly fishing sites.

Something hi-jacked my ability to search using the address bar. When I try to do a search... I see the internet explorer trying to go to some website with a URL that is something like "clickgo2it" or "clickit2go" I am not sure what the site is... but I know it is not MSN.

I went into TOOLS to internet options and tried changing the "search from the address bar" options - but nothing will get my internet explorer to go back to searching from MSN.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld jyanich,

It sounds like you have scumware. Try running adaware and spybot search and destroy. Some of these scumware products are almost impossible to get rid off. Try and get others using your computer not to agree to downloads from websites.

There is also another factor here -- last week Verisign began taking all the typo traffic that includes a .com or .net in the url. That traffic all used to go to MSN search.

See: [webmasterworld.com...]

However, with .net and .com typos you still get a search page - it just belongs to Verisign. So I agree with korkus2000, it sounds like scumware in this case.
