Is there any problem using this tag <h2 class="titles"> as opposed to <h1>. Is there preference to H1 by itself without the class tag?

Hi Tactik,
Welcome to Webmaster World. Lots of great info and community here.

There is a lot of info on the H1 tag in this forum. This is a good read Is H1 Tag Still Effective? [webmasterworld.com].

I work with the theory that search engines specifically look for the H1 tag and give that info special weight. This also holds true for the other H tags, but H1 is important.

Modify the appearance of your tag either with CSS or inline style, but keep the H1 tag.

The number in the tag is to rate it by importance in a heirarchy. Use the correct numbers from 1 downwards, but restyle the content using CSS as you wish.

Go to [validator.w3.org...] and enter the URL of the page that you want to check.

Tick the boxes for Show Source and Verbose Output and especially for Document Outline and hit the Validate button.

On the results screen, scroll down past the Error List (if there is one) to the section marked Document Outline.

If the results there do not look like a summary of your document then you are abusing the <hx> tags.
