Pop up exit

My knowledge of javascript is basic (and I mean very basic). I've been asked to setup a pop up on exit (site exit not page). I've found various scripts which set cookies, so that the pop up doesn't always appear. I've also found scripts which don't use cookies but let you define which links will trigger the pop up.

I need this to work on a large site so is there any way of a popup only appearing if the visitor is leaving my domain and if the cookie has expired?

dont do it! Tell your gaffer he is wrong. He will lose visitors or at least return visitors. I HATE onload popups less than on exit one. Why not disable the back button or right click to wind your users up a bit more. :):)

I agree with ukgimp. Most people hate pop-ups and pop-unders. Some get down right hostile towards a company that uses them. Because they've been abused so much, many people like me have turned to blockers to prevent the display of all ads on all sites. Even with the blocker, I won't return to any site which has pop-ups and pop-unders because it shows the owner is clueless on how to treat visitors.

I know you're in a bad spot but those who work on sites should be using their knowledge to tell bosses when their ideas are not good.

Agree totally with the others. If you can in any way avoid this situation then do it!

There are too amny people out there abusing the use of popups. Until they stop and the user psyche changes toward them I would do your damdest to convince your boss to eject the whole idea - period.

Please note that I do not believe that this is true...

Perhaps you can suggest that Google is collecting info sites that have popups since this is built into the Google toolbar.

That might be enough to kill the idea.

Well I managed to get him to use it on one page (better than the whole site).
