I'm looking for a free utility that will do search and replace of strings throughout an entire directory and sub-directories.

I have one called s&r 98, but it keeps hanging up with errors about "rich text" issues.

Can anybody recommend a good free search and replace tool?

I would recommend TextPipe, but you're looking for free. :->

If you are changing simple text files then you should have no problem in doing this, but from your error messages it appears that you might have saved some of the files in Rich Text Format. In that case you'll need a different program, or you'll need to resave the files as plain Text instead.

Having tried all of the above, I would recommend BK Replace Em.
