I've got an old laptop on my desk that nobody was using so I stripped out most of the software and left in IE5. It's running Japanese Windows 98. The browser has an annoying habit of prompting me every day for Windows Update saying that there is a critical update for me. Generally I don't mind an occasional Windows Update notice prompting me to add in new patches. However, this update notification is for me to upgrade to IE6. I don't want IE6 on this machine...so where do I kill the Windows Update notifications on Windows 98 / IE5?

bill,

I believe it's in Control Panel->Automatic Updates

If you just want to stop the Internet Explorer updates go to control panel - Internet Options - CLick on the Advanced tab, and under the subheading of Browsing unselect Automatically check for Internet Explorer Updates.

Thanks guys...I'd forgotten about that area.

I remember some of the older versions of the MS Update as having a bit more user customization. You could deselect any of the updates offered. Now it seems that Critical type notifications can't be sidestepped that way any longer.
