IE 6.0 Objects not appearing

I'm new to this group and I'm getting nowhere anywhere else. I installed java SDK 1.4 and Tomcat 4.0 over the weekend. I seriously doubt this has anything to do with my problem but just in case, those are the facts.
Today when I logged on, I noticed my AOL IM home page was getting scripting errors (objects not found). I then went to some random web sites and found that many gifs, jpegs, and other objects were missing. I never touched my security settings or any other IE properties for that matter. Does anybody know what is going on?

Have you recently loaded any part of visual studio?

No, I haven't. It might have something to do with my environment variables (I added a few last night and the browser worked fine - for awhile). When I restarted my notebook, the problem was back.
I wish I could find some consistency to my problem. i.e. if I go to cnn.com, most of the gifs, jpegs, ...etc. display. If I click on one of the stories, most do not. Same goes for other sites. It's simply not finding objects even though they clearly exist.

Thanks for the response.

What version of IE is it? You may have curropted it. I would try an upgrade and see if that fixes the problem.

Could be a dodgy cache?

Delete all your temporary internet files (option under Tools->Internet Options).
Make sure everything is gone, including the cookies and the index.dat files.

Then restart and see what happens.

Thanks for the repsonse but I can't even look at it - my browser isn't showing a scrollbar. I don't know if this breaks policy (maybe you can delete this message) but could you please e-mail me your response to <snip>

Sorry ro do this but, unless I post a reply, I can't see the message (no scroll bar being displayed). By posting any reply, it takes me down where I can see the ;ast response.

By the way, I did reinstal; IE 6.0 and grabbed all the updates. It didn't help at all.

You've installed the Java SDK, you may find the MS Virtual Machine is no longer handling Java but the Sun one is. Try:

"Tools > Options > Advanced > Java ( Sun )" un-check option

"Tools > Options > Advanced > Microsoft VM" check option "JIT Compiler".

Might help.

You've installed the Java SDK..

Don't see how that would affect "gifs and jpegs".

I have Java 1.4 installed and I don't get any problems with the sites mentioned.

I have experinced that without a reason, all my other browsers would function properly, and then the next day it magically fixed it self up. This probaly wont make you feel better.

Mark

Unfortunately, that is my problem too - magically clears up if I toggle (delete, then reinsert some classpath variables)
It's extremely fustrating because I can't even use many websites (the objects I need don't show up).

I ran a Norton Antivirus but it showed all clear. Has anybody heard of a potential virus that has this pattern?
