"...near even split between 800 and 1024. No other resolution comes anywhere close..."
w3schools browser stats are pretty much in line with that.
I'd find this an interesting topic thread to keep alive, and for people to post the resolutions they see on their sites every now and again. It would be interesting to watch the trends as monitor resolutions increase on the one hand, and PDAs increase in popularity on the other.

Which is why I feel (as per the other thread on this) that fluid content has to be the way forward now due to the fact that people are upgrading their monitors....
TJ
monitor prices are falling and the clear trend will be to higher resolution
All modern monitors are easily capable of 1024x768.
The limiting factor tends to be either the graphics cards or the fact that users find 1024x768 'too small' on the crappy 14" fishbowl monitor that they got 'free' with the PC. :)
Totally agree that fluid design is the way forward (as was probably apparent in the other thread).
Of course you can never rule out 800 x 600 and I never design over 760px.
I have always used fixed width - it has always been and will continue to be the way forward.
I am still designing liquid for this res as the lowest common denominator. Do you think I should give up trying to queeze my pages into this resolution?
Also I had the idea of making an interface that would govern a page layout by referencing different external style sheets depending on the resolution.
This might then remove the need for liquid layout?
Have to disagree with you there Knighty
I bet those who deliberated the design of this forum would disagree ;)
I checked this page at 640 x 480 and it looks great.
A fixed width of 720px would bug me if I had to surf using lower resolutions (personally I use 1024 and prefer liquid pages to fixed layout)
Any body know what percentage of users are using 640 X 480?
Its very low these days (less than 3% [upsdell.com]) - but I reckon that this might actually increase as more people start to browse using palmtops, mobile phones and WebTV.
This might then remove the need for liquid layout?
What about non-standard resolutions? Non-maximised browsers? When the 'Explorer' bars are open? Browsers with add-ons?
Don't want to start this argument on a whole other thread tho - refer to [webmasterworld.com...] instead :)
