checking for NN7

any way that anyone knows to distinguish between versions of NN, or IE for that matter...
if i use navigator.appname/vers i get something like

5.0 (windows, en-US)

for NN7
and the same for NN6...

arghh..
also tried using the perl ENV vars but the tell nothing more sadly..
any ideas?
