What browsers to look out for...

Hi folks,

Ive have a form using a ton of alerts. Some act funny in Netscape 4.7 and other older browsers. We are redirecting users that have older versions of Netscape and IE.

Are there any other browser brands &/or versions that I should also redirect? Opera 7 looks okay. Any opinions are appreciated.

Hi Schoolbag,

IMHO, your page should work for all browsers, regardless of browser version. However, I suppose that you can make this decision based on your target market. What audience is your site aimed at? Use the answer to this question to guestimate the predominant browser/version that may be in use. Definitely not an ideal solution though!

When you say that the alerts look strange, are these javascript alert()'s or some form of dhtml layer alert? Javascript alerts should behave in a very similar way on all javascript compliant browsers, and I imagine that it's very, very rare to find one that isn't these days. Although, some web-savvy people will browse with javascript turned off!

You'd be surprised at the answers you'll get to that question. Most people will say that your web site should work in all browsers. Well, that's kind of odd because not many people's web site works in IE3. Not even Microsoft's.

My opinion is if you educate people they're using an older, non-standards compliant browser and they want the services you provide then they should upgrade so they can get the full experience of your web site then you're doing okay in my book.

Netscape 4.76 is beyond dead IMO. But so is OS/2 and people still use that.

It's a catch 22. Do you abandon or do restrict yourself to keep a dying beast alive? Do you close your doors on some customers or do you impress the hell out of other customers?

The choice is yours.
