According to MS, IE5.5 has reached the end of it's life cycle.

All those resisting IE6 will be forced to upgrade!

Nice find - thanks.

Some tidbits of note:

Ironically, IE 5.01 SP2 is still available as it is primarily used by businesses running Windows 2000.

The decision did not sit well with Microsoft's support staff, which had been using the older browser as an upgrade path for users still running IE 4.

According to reports, upgrading directly to Internet Explorer 6 from IE 4 has a tendency to cause errors on older operating systems such as Windows 98. By first upgrading to IE 5.5, most problems are eliminated.

MS obviously wants people to upgrade to XP as fast as possible, so to get eveybody on their databases, call homes working nicely, and consequently get them to upgrade all their old office software to "XP compliant!"

A great time to consider seriously open office, Star Office etc, which will still work quite nicely thank you very much in Windows 98.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my thinking is that the Google Toolbar doesn't work in IE6?

Pendanticist, you stand corrected. :)

No problems with IE6.

Are you sure? I tried IE6 some months back and not only was the toolbar gone, but I couldn't install the toolbar either.

Positive. My toolbar even withstood the IE6 SP1 upgrade. I would try installing it again. If it doesn't work, something else is wrong.

<added>In the past IE6 was known for occasional quirky installs that didn't work exactly right, in fact it's still quirky!</added>

Ok, Thanks. That was the only thing holding me back all these months since I first tried to run it.

Thanks again. :)

Well then, let me just click my way on over there....

WOW, lets hope Netscape retires the dreaded 4 versions. They are a designer's wort nightmare. On the other hand if AOL has any say in the matter, they will be around for years.

It works just fine for me (IE6 + GoogleTB, that is!).
Frankly, I don't mind them pulling the plug on IE5.5, IE6 being so much better in terms of standars and all (even though my browser of choice is Opera). What worries me is the rumour (not confirmed yet by any source that I'm aware of) about them pulling the plug on win98. Has anybody heard anything about this?
