Use of # in anchor

My apologies for this question, but I've just put <a name=""></a> links to spots in a few lengthy pages; this is my first use of this anchor. I was surprised to see the #"" coming up as part of the url in the browsers when I tested it. Will SE's see this as a new page in addition to the one accessed by other links that don't have the hash?
