Running IE 5.5 in Win 2000 on LAN Win2000 server--

I am having this problem that seems increasingly common. In IE 5.5, the View Source command goes non-functional. (it hourglasses very briefly and then gives up) I have been to the support sites and the best wisdom seems to be to empty the internet files temp directory (it gets too big?), and make sure IE can find Notepad. Having emptied the temp directory (no change) and confirmed that Notepad is working, still no joy. I notice that if I log on as open or another user name View, Source works fine. I suspect my user profile is somehow corrupt, and tried deleting my user profile to create a new. This works (for awhile) but I also have to reconfigure my desktop and many application preferences.

So the problem seems to be something getting hosed in my user profile. My personal opinion is that I am driving too hard. Clicking too fast and causing the poor program to simply puke. I am going to create a backup user profile and just restore it whenever view source goes out.

This is not my favorite catagory of workaround (reinstall). If anyone has a better idea I'd love to hear it.

Dump the Infernal Exploder.

Download Mozilla 1.2.1 or Netscape 7.02.

I would like to do just that. Unfortunately I am imprisoned here in a microsoft gulag and have to make the best of it.

FYI Netscape browser never did this to me. Seems to be a better scheme to view the source in the browser. More of Micro$oft's stratgey to bind their lame apps into the "OS" (their GUI, Windows).

Check what program is set as "HTML Editor" in Internet Options > Programs.

Greying out of the view source link happens occasionally on my IE 5.5 at work too, but not on IE 6 at home.

The solution is simply to swear a lot at your PC and threaten to throw it out of the window. If that doesn't work, just closing all the IE windows and starting afresh seems to work wonders.

As ever, M$ support was about as much use as a chocolate fireguard - good job there's always Mozilla or Opera to use instead.

This is sometimes because the diskspace used by the profile has reached its limit.

One way I fiound to check this is to fill some form on a static webpage, submit then hit Back. If the values in the fields dissapear, the profile may be full.

If you have deleted ALL the temp IE files, and it still doesnt work, try deleting the 'deleted items' and/or sent messages in Outlook.

My html editor was set to FrontPage, which I have on this computer. I think that's different from the View, Source app. Changing it to Notepad results in no change. Still broken. I'm thinking about upgrading to IE 6. I also have yet to install SP 3. Possibly that will make a difference.

I just found an article on how to repair IE through the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. I will let you know how that turns out.

Yes, Microsoft has really obscured this one. HTML editor and View Source are two different things. A bit of research turned up a couple of approaches for customizing View Source in IE

APPROACH ONE
This is a kludge to trick IE. Essentially, you can create a copy of the .exe file for your chosen editor and rename that copy so that it now reads "Notepad.exe"

Then paste that new "Notepad.exe" file into Windows so it replaces the original Notepad.exe file. Most people would want to backup the real Notepad.exe in case they need to revert later on.

Full instructions for various versions of Windows can be found here:
[notepad-replacements.com...]

APPROACH TWO
If you're brave about registry edits, you can also try this approach. They give you a small .reg file for you to customize and run:
[sanx.org...]

APPROACH THREE
Use Opera. It's a quick option under Preferences > Programs and Paths

  • Reduce your cache size to something small like 1MB
  • Delete your Temporary Internet Files including all offline content.
  • Then go into Settings Settings and move the folder up C:\ so it is C:\Temporary Internet Files
  • Reboot

Usually erasing the Temp Files takes care of the "View Source" issue. You are going in through Tools, Internet Options, and then clicking Delete Files?
