Checking pages in both Explorer 5 and Explorer 6

I'm working on a site redesign at the moment and it's about a 50/50 split in terms of ver. 5 and ver. 6 Explorer usage with my visitors, clocking in at about 35% each. My question is, how do I make sure that the new pages look how I want them to in both versions of the browser. I haven't a second PC handy, and having to have friends constantly check for me is a pain. Do I have any options to run both?

go to google or other se and type in +browser +emulator and try one of the ones you find in the returns (at least I think that will work.)

Well, a browser emulator won't work .. You can never emulate exactly all the rendering bugs. And, you can technically not install two versions of IE on the same computer (most other browsers are ok, but not IE).

Actually, you can successfully install two independent IE versions that live and work freely simultaneously .. but that entirely depends on your computer skills. I've done it before, but it's a lot of work, and I do not recommend messing with it.

But if it works in IE 5, you don't have to worry too much about IE 6 .. especially not if you make IE6 render the pages in "quirks mode".

I like to test web sites for Mac IE compatibility. I don't have a mac at home. So I visit my friendly neighborhood cafe, which has a mac computer.

Internet cafe's are a good way for checking for different browsers.

If your web site validates with the W3C HTML validator, you have a better chance that your site will work cross browser/platform.

We had a thread about this a little while ago entitled Browser/Platform Simulator [webmasterworld.com]. I haven't tried this software yet, but you could use something like VMware or Virtual PC to emulate a separate install of Windows in which you could run a different version of IE.
