Do Popup killers affect html target=_blank?

Can this kind of software/service change the behavior of link code?

Earthlink offers popup killers, MSN touts its advances in the area, and many download free and/or paid utilities to stop pop-ups.

Can this kind of software block the opening of a new window via a simple target=_blank attribute?

Thanks

The mozilla popup blocker doesn't affect windows opened with target=_blank, probably because they are the result of a user action.

The idea is to block unrequested windows, not any new window.

Some pop-up blockers do have a setting to only allow one window or browser instance at a time. This setting will stop target="_blank".

I use AdSubtract Pro to block popups and popunders. It doesn't block target=_blank windows.

Hi notsosmart,

I believe most add blockers wont bother you. I use a few user requested pop ups with window size calls on onload event on some sites.

Perfectly legit, nothing to do with unrequested adds. Untill it gets abused, I think we are safe to use it.

As korkus2000 mentionned, a minority of add blockers over do the job. I hope they improve soon.

I employ user activated pop-ups windows to display additional info on several pages, and yes the 'Earthlink popup killers' stop these new windows from opening. Hopefully, the user read the instructions and remembers to hold down Ctrl to disable the utility so that the "good" pop-ups still work.

keyplyr, are you using tedster's POP-UP FUNCTION with a 'vanilla' link for spiders?

[webmasterworld.com...]

Does "Earthlink popup killer" also block this?

No I'm not, but thanks for bringing that to my attention - I have other uses for it :)

Actually, I don't wish spiders to find these (child window) pages and I keep them behind a disallowed directory. But to my knowledge, using Tedster's example would not overcome pop-up blockers that limit the number of open windows.
