There has been a lot of discussion whether to use frames or not on a web site.

Before posting what I have to say I think it is important to mention that there's no "right" answer to this question .. it's all about different opinions.

A lot of web developers refuse to use frames, and do so for very good reasons. If you can avoid using frames the site is easier to navigate. loads faster, less confusing .. etc. Depending on the page content, using frames might effect your SERP.

But there are also times when it would be wise to use frames instead. You don't have to load certain content over and over again, the navigation is always easy for the visitor to access. Most people use a frame based site just as easily as they use a non-frame based site.

There are times when I use frames, and times when I don't.

Example: I run big online community. I use frames to separate the menu from the content. The users like this, since it's easy for them to access certain services/sections directly. Then, within the section there are separate links - on page. Using frames limits the number of server requests for the dynamically generated pages .. and since the site has a lot of visitors it doesn't use up as much bandwith.

Here's the question:
Do you use frames or not?
When do you use frames, and when don't you?

DrDoc, if SBC has their way, none of us will be using frames in the future...

If I were to read between the lines of the SBC intent, I'd be willing to bet that they are going to go after some fairly large players like Microsoft since they make extensive use of frames in most of their applications.

I'm stubborn when it comes to using frames because they just seem awkward and messy to manage. I've seen too many sites that have missing pages, slow loading pages and duplicates of pages in different frames-- and sometimes in combination.

I'll probably hold out on this method until position: fixed; is worth incorporating into page design.

Although, I have seen one excellent use of frames:

I don't think there is anything wrong with using them intelligenly.

Here is an older post where we listed good and bad issues of using frames.

I personally have not found a use for them except displaying external pages with my branding. I would be interested to know how many people still use them successfully.

i designed one page in with the frames are part of the graphical concept. it's a three-part dived site and frames suit the concept of the page very well.

if only a subpage is found in se, then this is displayed, only a very small frame on top appears, telling the visitor, that this page is only one part of 'the big site' so he/she can read the page and then, if interested, switch over to the complete site.

it's necessary to say, that the graphical design is important for the page.

Hey there korkus, I'm still using framesets in particular circumstances, one of which you've mentioned above. I have one client who represents a variety of manufacturers when it comes to his product lines.

To help save him money and to minimize maintenance, we bring in the manufacturers content through the use of framesets.

I also have a furniture catalog that is sitting in framesets which has performed fairly well over the years.

I typically limit my use of frames to bringing in external content. I've even put the hidden frameset to some good use when the client does not want the external URL's to be shown.

In all the above instances, the <noframes> tag has been extremely beneficial to promotion. Without it, frames would be absolutely dead in an SEM environment.

I must say that I always provide a front end that does not use framesets and in most cases, the framed pages can stand on their own which is very important when structuring framesets.

Hmm .. "bring in external sites"
But that could mean violation of copyrights ..

You can't display someone else's page within your frameset ..

You can't display someone else's page within your frameset.

You can if there is an agreement between supplier and distributor. Also, depending on the industry, many manufacturers offer a distributor backend that some will put into framesets.

As a sidenote, never frame someone else's content unless you have permission to do so. As DrDoc points out, it may be in direct violation of copyright.
