Hey seanpaul,

Have you tried using HTML that has the Flash in it and attaching the Flash movie or using a remote server to host it? I think you should reconsider doing this though. Personally I don't like getting Flash emails. Why not just link back to your site where the Flash movie is?

Thanks for that, will give your suggestions a go.

Personally I feel flash emails (when used subtly) can be quite affective. I'm thinking from a b2b point of view. It helps give a profesional feel to marketing emails.

I agree with korkus2000.

Don't send me one unless you want to be added to the Junk Senders list immediately.

And then you'll never get any more marketing messages across.

Hey if it works for you thats great. Another thing to consider is to create small Flash files if they are going in an email. I would not have anything bigger than 40K.

Thanks Korkus2000,

Just because an email contains some flash work is no reason to ditch it strait away. Surely a company thats put the time an effort into creating an aesthetic promotional email deserves a bit of attention.

I used to think the same thing.

But now i dont.

If my email starts singing or dancing its outta there!

I will respond to personal emails because the person has taken the time to write an email to me personally.

Graphics in email = mailing list / spam , in my mind anyway and im sure a lot of people feel the same.

Theres no way someone would add graphics to an email that was going to be sent to less than x amount of people. As you said it takes time to do and creating a new graphic for each person would be a bad waste of resources.

From a marketing point of view, personal emails are much more effective.

IMHO

JOAT :)

I think you need to consider why you are using the email. If you want a multimedia experience for a B2B situation then why not create cd-roms and mail them to the business. The impact of this is huge compared to an email. Emails are free and are easy but why not step it up to the next level.

If you find it effective, and you know your audience, then by all means use it. I use Flash and like Flash. Don't let me make you think I hate Flash. I know it has a time and a place.

Ok, I hear what you guys are saying. But why does Flash have to be an all singin all dancing experience. It can be used to help create an informative, subtle interactive email.

Perhaps the problem here is that Flash is not on the whole used as inteligently as it could be.

Also just because an email is sent out to x people simultaniously this doesnt mean it deserves ignoring. Mailing lists can be useful things. It may be spam to some people but others do appreciate it (depending on the scenario).

Anyway, I tried putting the html which contained the flash into an email from outlook, I also specified the location of the swf file. I also tried attaching the SWF, on both occasions when the email was received it crashed outlook.

Any suggestions?

seanpaul,

An important factor to consider if your flash mail is for B2B purposes is company firewalls. Many companies do not allow html mail (or mails with embedded MIME content, or even attachments) through to their mail servers, as they feel that these generally constitute spam. This means that many of your target recipients will not see your flash presentation at all due to internal IT policies.

Yes outlook express.

Fair point about the firewalls...

Another thing you might want to consider. I don't know how representative this is, but I work in an office where everyone has newish computers, Windows 2000, IE6, Outlook, etc. Guess what mail client everyone but me uses? Pine. Which means that if you are trying to reach them, fancy e-mail is in the best case reduced to your text-only version and more likely the whole source code of the e-mail is displayed. Not very effective.

I would say that is not at all representative :) But it does point out the value of multipart messages with a pure text component included.

Outlook Express can't do that, but there are other (free) solutions that can.
