Header tags and page structure

Strictly only one <h1> tag?

I have content on a webpage which I do not want to split into two web pages. I feel that on this page there are two main headings, one at the top of the page and one halfway down. Not a heading and a subheading. Is it okay to use <h1></h1> for both? i.e. 2 x <h1> tags on the same web page?

I'm coming from the good pratise/search engine angle.

I see no reason not too. If they are both main headings then that's what I would do....

It is valid HTML. As far as how engines react I don't know.
