Any Reasonably Priced Scripts?

I need to upgrade the menu system on a client site and was a bit taken aback to get the pricing for the new version of HierMenus - $1,500 for a site with more than 40 pages. I don't mind paying, but that seems like a pretty significant sum to hit my client with - especially since he will also be paying us to implement it.

Anyone have other recommendations for menu scripts? They don't have to be free - but something in the under-$500 range would be nice. I don't want to burn up $1,000 in time looking for alternatives, so suggestions are welcomed.

There are some pretty slick menu scripts listed at hotscripts.com...

CoolMenus is one I was looking at, which works in NN4, IE 5 and Opera 5 on Mac. Cross-browser issues eliminated a lot of the options for me... if it doesn't work in NN4 & Opera, I'm not using it.

Looks like most of the lower end scripts will require quite a bit of tweaking to get them to visually integrate with your site, but if you're willing/able to get your hands dirty, there are lots out there to play with.

I can recommend this menu - great! When you go to that URL don't be set off by the site design and topic. This guy certainly is NOT a designer. Go to HOME/About and you find information about this menu.
It's completely cross browser compatible back to NS 4, but it also features the latest effects which are only supported by newer Browsers.

For standards-compliant browsers, a good DTHML menu can be found at BrainJar [brainjar.com]. The site also has several excellent DOM/Javascript tutorials.

this was recommended to me... everything is free, and cross-browser compatible (including Opera). I haven't tried it myself, but there are people that swear by these scripts.

Dynamic Drive also have a number of cross browser menu scripts available for free.

The one thing about these scripts is (and don't get me wrong - many of them are top quality) that the code they use is very bloated. It has to be, to make it as easy as possible for the end user to customise. However, this bloat means that the JS files can be quite large. A decent tutorial (either from a book or online) and a bit of JavaScript and DOM study means that you can built a half-decent script yourself, especially if you want to add images and the like to your hover menus - which many of the free scripts don't/can't cater for.

That's what one thing I really like about the Brainjar menu, because the author has written nice walkthrough [brainjar.com] of how he went about creating the script. It's worth visiting just for the tutorial.
