Where is "The Fold" - 800x600

Where is the bottom?

Hi everyone,

To my unending horror I find myself having to build a <shudder>fixed</shudder> site.

So much so that I need to know where the 'safe point' is in regards to the bottom of the browser window on 800x600.

Users: Mainly IE5+
Monitor: 15"

Anyone help me out a little?

I would estimate around 400px of "one screen" vertical space in a full-screen browser window.

Personally, I'd think it safest to go with 720x400. That way, it also prints out proper width on a standard sheet of paper... I think. ;)

don't know if you are interested, but there is a great piece of free software that can show what any page will look like based on pixel width/length. Just a drag and drop of a button. It comes with the standard sizes or you can make your own custom page sizes and it works with any browser. Sticky me if you are interested.

As long as it's freeware, I'm sure it would be alright to mention the software title in the public thread... that way anyone can look it up, instead of everyone needing to bother you through stickymail.

Heheh... yeah, but <whine>I have to manually resize my browser tests... and then I have to test everything on Windows anyway... and none of the cool SEO software is available for Mac...</whine>

But that looks like a very handy little resource for you Windows users at any rate... hehe. Thanks for sharing. :)

If you use Opera, the exact pixel dimensions of the window are shown at the top left. So you can easily drag the edges of the window and see exactly at what pixel dimensions your design begins to be hidden.

Only one of the nice touches in Opera. Even if it's not your default browser, I feel it definitely beongs in every webmaster's tool kit.

It also may be worth noting that the monitor's physical size (15" in this case) will not play into the decision at all. The issue is the screen resolution in pixels, not its physical size.

In case you haven't found it yet Nick, or if anyone else is wondering, it's at:

File > Preferences > (check) Show window size

It shows up in the title bar at top.

Somewhat OT

It be even better if you could tell Opera how big you wanted it to be (keyed in)! Then you could test for different sizes exactly and quickly.
