Mozilla-Bookmarks

Need a backup - can't find them on the harddrive

Can anyone tell me where Mozilla stores the bookmarks? I guess it must be a file (an html-file?) but I simply can't find it.

The main reason for that is I want to make a copy of that file to save it if my computer crashes and I somehow lost the "Personal Toolbar Folder", what makes me wanting to reinstall Mozilla. I cannot save any links beside the "Home" Button anymore.

I do have Netscape 4 (not Netscape 6 nor 7) on the same machine (for testing purposes only), if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help.

In Mozilla, go to Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks, and Export Bookmarks. I don't think it stores them in an html file, but it will import or export one.

At linux it is saved on ~/.mozilla/defaults/random.slt/bookmarks.html. On Windows you should have a personal profile equivalent to that directory on C:\Windows\Profiles\<user name>\Application Data. random.slt should be a random string.

It does store them as an HTML file, much like Navigator does, in a file called bookmarks.html. Exactly where it keeps the file depends on which version of Mozilla: recent versions keep it with user profiles, in a subdirectory of WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\

Thanx to all. I wasn't aware of the "Import/Export" Feature - that did what I needed, it created a bookmarks.html file with all bookmarks in it. Way cool:)

BTW: I found some bookmarks.html files under "profiles", but all of them I found were not the one I was looking for.

Now having what I need I am hungry for more:)

Is there a way (again, I did not find it, but maybe I need to get new glasses) to kinda backup all settings? Like the entries in the sidebar and other preferences?

Yes, you can simply back-up your defaults folder (windows) or the sub-folders: pref and profile. To view your preferred settings, use a text editor to open the all.js file to view your main settings.

Mozilla/defaults/

Mozilla/defaults/pref/
all.js
editor.js
inspector.js
mailnews.js
mdn.js
smime.js
winpref.js
xpinstall.js

Mozilla/defaults/profile/
bookmarks.html
localstore.rdf
mimeTypes.rdf
panels.rdf
search.rdf
