An answer needed please. A colleague has designed a site with images which, when you roll over each, produces text on the page. The text is meaningful stuff which I'd like search engines to read. Do they read this? Or is there something we can design into the site to help.

I guess what you are reffering to are layers. If so, yes, they read it.

Assuming the text is not composed of images, I agree with Sinner_G (ooh, that rhymed).

Could you be refering to ALT text? If so then yes to an extent.

If you are refering to layers that appear when the image is rolled over be careful that you do not get caught up in the hidden layers realm. Layers can be hidden and as a result have been abused by some websites.

Guess I should have broke up the sentence into it's pieces. Still,

I agree with Sinner_G,
I think that's plain for all to see.

Er, I won't quite my day job.

Back to the topic -- will search engines index text that is set display: none?

Point to note: Search engine spiders read CODE (elements, text etc.) - presentation (CSS) is for the browser to interpret.

I would however, be very cautious regarding display:none; since this has immense potential for abuse (hidden keyword stuffed text).
