I've been asked to create a site for someone. It was meant to be just a simple web page but now they want to have user registration where members can login every time they visit etc etc. Problem is, I haven't got a clue how to do this. Can someone help?

have no fear, there are lots of ready made scripts and techniques for this.

do a search on "password protection" and you'll find lots of methods.

On UNIX systms you can use something called HTACCESS, on NT systems there are ASP based methods, JAVASCRIPT based methods, and others.

If it is one 'generic' username and password you could ask your hosting company if they offer a 'password protect' service.

They may also offer a more complex service where you can assign, or the user can assign, individual usernames and passwords.

As I am 'scriptually challenged' myself, I usually ask this question to save myself a lot of work and trial and error.

Rule One : It is NEVER "just a simple web page"

Rule Two : When quoting for the job, figure out how long it will take. Then add 50%. That way you won't lose too much on the deal

Rule Three : Within six months of completion of the site, the client will want extra functionality/a new Flash home page/the world on a stick. All for free

The trouble is, those just one more page requests are basically simple, so I tend to do them.

But after the initial deal is done, I make a deal for maintenance, which includes everything I do to the site from that day forward - at an hourly rate.
