Hi,

Just wondering what the beta version of ie 7 is like. Will this be roughly what the final thing is going to be like? Is there any reason to have it now? And also, does anyone know when it will be released?

Thanks for any info :)

Worth putting on a spare machine to see how your sites will render in it as in typical MS fashion it's not standards compliant and breaks quite a few CSS "standards" - even those that worked fine in IE6. Hard to tell whether those will be fixed or left as "features" ;)

Other than that I quite like it as a browser (nice font smoothing), but it's still rubbish compared to FireFox.

I actually prefer it to Firefox but thats because it doesnt eat as much RAM.... MS seem to of get at least 1 point right.

There are a few alignment CSS bugs but I havnt found any other yet, I actually use it as the main browser on my dev machine, as long as you test stuff in other browsers your fine.

Thanks guys,

I went ahead and downloaded it and am using it to make this post :p

I didn't realize that it was going to replace IE6 - I still need 6 for dev so does anyone know how to get it back?

Is it possible to have both on 1 machine?

Cheers

Quite tricky. There's a post on the outside at WebmasterWorld somewhere about that.

That's why I suggested to put it on a spare box ;)

i used add/remove progs to remove it. IE 6 was unscathed.

I read that reply with IE7 :) too late :p

But yes, i uninstalled it and am back to 6, phew, what a waste of time.

On the plus side though, at least my site looks good in version 7 :)

Interesting - glad remove worked for you - it failed for me. I might be on an earlier beta.

Beta 2 I dont think works with add/remove.

The File menu only appears on mine when I hold ALT down. i actually quite like it that way, I hardly ever use it anyway.

It doesn't make a lot of practical difference, but actually IE uses more RAM than you think. The deal is that it's integrated so much into the OS that it gets to ride along on the RAM already used by Windows. Firefox doesn't get that advantage. So, although IE may actually leave more RAM free, it's not really an issue of MS getting something right, as much as them having the luxury of being able to piggyback their browser on top of the OS.
