Detect Netscape 6

I need to block N6 and allow N7+

I am trying to find a good script that will block Netscape 6 but allow Netscape 7 to view my page. Searching the internet for scripts is giving me code that recognizes both browsers as the same.

My site is done in CSS which looks fine in N7 but not N6, so I want to redirect N6 users to a page asking them to update there browsers (I think this would be easier than trying to get my page to work )

Any help would be appreciated.

You would need to parse the user agent string and pick out a build date either pre or post the Mozilla 1.0 release date.

However, Netscape 6.x is totally dead now, the only people still using it are just webmasters testing pages. NN6.x was too unstable for real use. I wouldn't bother trying, personally.

On behalf of those of us -- and particularly Mac people -- who have older machines and/or use older software, please don't block/lock out UAs just because they're older versions.

My main machine, a desktop Mac, is not brand-new and runs Netscape 7.x, etc. But my laptop, an admittedly old thing but the only computer I have for traveling, runs NS 4.8, tops. (Toldja it was old:)

Also, many sites still require Explorer and the 'newest' Mac IE, 5.1.7, was last distributed in 2001. Ironically, that old thing runs under OS 8, 9 and 10 and even handles some game sites better than Firefox and Mozilla. Go figure.

Please know I'm not saying to code for older apps -- those of us still using them by choice or necessity know many sites may look wonky and/or not punction ferpectly:) But at least we can see them -- and spend money, even! TIA...

Pfui - for what it's worth iCab runs on older macs and the latest beta supports web standards well (far better than IE5 and NN4).

why would you want to do that?

You can always do what you like and just look at it yourself ...
