IE browser only showing first letter of the Title

How do I fix this

For some reason my IE6 browser is only showing the first letter of the title of all web pages.

For example if I look at Google, the title of the page at the top of my browser only shows G.

What can I do?

I noticed the same thing one day last week. But I only use the browser to surf the msn gaming site and gave it no further consideration.

Not a clue... use Firefox?

Does the window title just show the one letter, or is it followed by the usual "- Microsoft Internet Explorer" title?

This is not an error I've seen before, and I don't think there's a particular setting which controls this (you can edit the window title part in the registry but not the page title display). I suspect it may be a sign of some malware or virus on your system.

I just looked through the M$ Help and Support site and found that this is a known issue. The site says that the problem may be caused by Mijenix ZipMagic 98, Documagix Papermaster 98, or eFax HotSend and an installed Windows Desktop Update component.

Hope this helps.

Nice find coho75, I searched but came up with nothing. Here's the link to the MS support article:

That is interesting, but I don't have those processes running (when I start IE or any other time) and I don't have that fax software. Hmmm, something else perhaps?

Also, I just surfed around MyMSN and the game site, and the quirk appears to be gone now.

Hey guys - I too have this problem. The responses that Encyclo & coho75 posted is not the solution as that MS post refers to IE5 - we are having the problem with IE6. I have none of those components installed and don't have windows desktop update either.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

Yaaay - I solved it (with a little help from Google). I removed Google Desktop Search and the Google Toolbar and the Gmail Notifier. It wasn't until I removed the Notifier that it was fixed. So maybe someone else could remove that first and then open IE and see if it is fixed or if all of them need to be removed.

I have reinstalled GDS and it is still fine - I have not reinstalled the Notifier as I don't use it anymore.

I am having this same problem, only I have a clean install of Windows XP. This problem started occuring immediately after I installed XP Service Pack 2.

I have no other browsers installed or anything other than Yahoo messanger on my system right now.

It's most likely a problem in the SP2 as I am also having the problem on my laptop as well. It does not affect browsing but is an annoyance.

I had this problem and needed it fixed so I paid MS Support and this was their cure:
At this point, I recommend we use the following steps to troubleshoot this issue

=====================================
1. Click "Start", click "Run", type "inetcpl.cpl" and then press "Enter".
2. Click "Delete Cookies" and click "OK" when prompted to confirm.
3. Click "Delete Files" and click "OK" to confirm.
4. Click "Clear History" and select "Yes" to confirm.
5. Click "Settings", and then click "View Files". Delete all files in this folder.
6. In the Settings window, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in this folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and try again.
7. Switch to the "Security" tab, select "Internet" and click "Default Level" if it is not grayed out.
8. Clear the "Trusted sites" and "Restricted sites".
9. Switch to the "Privacy tab", click "Default" if it is not grayed out.
10. Switch to the "Content" tab, click "AutoComplete". Clear Forms and Passwords.
11. Switch to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions".

That cost $35.00 and worth every cent! I also removed MS Business Contact Manager, All add in tool bars and installed FireFox 1.5.0.1 with a slick skin. I have to test pages with IE but my main browser is Mozzilla 1.8b and Minimo.

FYI: My problem started when I downloaded Adobe Reader 7.x and it INSTALL the kitchen sink without asking! After I removed the Yahoo tool bar and Adobe Photo what ever it was is when I noticed the 1 letter page titles.
