Looking for some ideas on formatting a table

I'm in the process of designing a web app that will be used for updating database records. I'm designing the page that will display multiple records in a table layout similar to an Excel spreadsheet.

I've seen lots of examples of formatting this type of display but nothing really looks great to me. A standard table with 1 px borders looks pretty boring. Anybody seen a tabular layout that you think looks great. Just looking for some ideas.

Oh... I just realized the table layout for this forum looks pretty good. I'm not going to copy it but it does give me a few ideas.
