Now my question is, after you download a template, how do you edit it? I have an html editor but how do you also edit the pictures the correct way? Please try to make your answer detailed because I am new at html and everything else. Thanks in advance!

To edit images, you need a specific software tool made for editing those images. The professional choice is Photoshop -- and sometimes Fireworks. However, there are many graphics programs available ranging from free up to these powerhouse applications which go far beyond web application.
You make the changes you want to the image and save it. If you change the filename of the image, then you need to change that filename in the html. If you change the image's dimensions then you also need to change the width and height in the image tag.
That's the overview in broad strokes. Learning to use your specific image software well will be the key to a good job.
Photoshop is a very deep program and the text tool alone has an amazing depth to it. I suggest using the Help menu, online tutorials and such. Just roll up your sleeves and dive in.
