The other info that appears there is also blank.
Right.
The problem is that it wont allow me access to some websites, some sites it will and then wont allow java based drop down menus.
On other sites menus wont appear at all.
Two of the biggest sites that I have problems with have been unable to resolve this problem and are now scratching their heads.
Is it a virus?
Id like to uninstall IE but again I dont seem to be able to, the update from Microsft report that I have the latest version installed.
Any ideas?

What incre says about downloading a java machine may be true -- if you really mean to say "java" and not "javascript" -- they are two very different technologies. Because you are talking about dropdown menus, that makes me suspect that you are talking about javascript.
The fact that no version information appears in your Help menu points to some kind of trouble. I've been bailed out a couple times by some of the information on Microsoft's page "How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP."
why not just install firefox or opera and stop using IE ..if you want to check what you build with it for compatibility is one thing ..letting it talk to the web is another ..
sounds like it's gone into paranoid mode ..wont let you surf anything with skin showing ..will however let any passing javascript kick it into activex mode tho ....
so if you can get to tools options maybe we can see what it thinks it's doin ..
and if your bank says you need IE ..change your bank to one that knows about online security
I eat slow and savour ( to nite chilli con carné ..and kashmiri recipe for fried potatoes and courgettes in butter and yaourt with fresh coriandre ) made by self ..and living in the land of "rouge"..i have distractions in a bottle or 2 to prolonge the affair.
plus the proggy in question is on another machine which is elsewise occupied at the moment for anaother 2 hours or so ..rendering some extra slow humongeuos 3D graphix..however dinna greet bonny lad ..
BTW ..why are you still using IE ( any flavour ) to try to wreck your OS via the net?
2.) Lack of UA declaration/missing version numbers leads me to believe you probally have spyware (or a virus) but most likely spyware; use adaware to clean it out though using multiple scanners is suggested.
3.) Java is NOT effective clientside and is a HUGE SECURITY RISK! It is the ONLY way I've ever experienced security issues with Firefox (backdoor viruses ALL in the Java folders). Disable JAva and ignore sites that use it for anything clientside.
4.) Robin is right, use Firefox (or Opera).
5.) Symantec is as effective an antivirus as <snip>. You're actually better off without symantec (and most people wouldn't finish the sentence there heh). Symantec runs about 4-6 procceses to ahh, do one thing. It is the Netscape of anti-virus programs.
