I have developed a dynamic site with php, html 4.1 and css.
I only have ie6 installed and my site works fine in it. I was wondering what are the top 4 browser with versions that i can d/l to see what my site looks like in them.
Is it worth d/l ie5 and netscape 5,6,7,8?
Also, what version of firefox do most people use?
Any browser info would be great.
Thanks
It's probably worth testing your site in IE5.5, IE6, Safari 2, and Firefox 1.0. If you want to be more comprehensive then add in Mac IE5.2, Win IE5.0, and Opera 8. Netscape 4 is so old as to not be worth bothering in, 6-7.1 aren't used much any more, and 7.2/8 are roughly equivalent to Firefox 1.0.
I just d/l firefox 1.0.7
Looking at my stats of my site below shows that firefox 1.4.1 is used more than 1.0.7
Are they equivalent or should i get both? Also, i cant seem to find 1.4.1 on the mozilla site and 1.0.7 is the one they show on their main page.
40.00% MSIE 6.0
35.00% Firefox 1.4.1
8.00% Netscape 7.2
5.00% Opera 8.50
5.00% Firefox 1.0.7
2.00% Firefox 1.4
2.00% Safari 1.2
2.00% Firefox 1.0.6
1.00% MSIE 5.0
Thanks again :)
i have previously read that ie6 is used by more than 90% of users
That used to be what most general interest websites saw, up to the middle of last year or so. But the well marketed release of Firefox 1, along with a notable "Homeland Security" warning about IE in the US, pushed FireFox into explosive growth. For the first time since MS first stepped into the "browser wars", the IE user base has been eroding.
40% is a pretty low number for IE compared to what I usually see on general interest websites right now -- but I'd say 75% is common. This means that, more than ever, coding a web page exclusively for a pretty look in IE is not a wise move.
