Also- I have seen some lovely pages that have a kind of sunset opening. Different colours - I write poetry so you can imagine that would be a great thing to have. It would really enhance what I write - That is probably difficult unless I can find html and doctor it, but I don't really want to just lift html from someone's site as that seems unfair ( I know I could go to 'view source'). Where would I find that kind of info - eg how to do that, on the web?
Guess now I realised the possibilities I want to be ambitious!

For learning resources for html/JS etc, just google "HTML/Javascript Tutorials", plenty of good resources all over the web.
In regards to your requirements for pretty pages with sunset openings etc, HTML simply would not cut it. You are best to combine HTML/JS with use of multimedia tools such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks MX, Coldfusion etc.
Then again, just a suggestion.
Sometimes the standards information at [w3c.org...] can be hard to understnad in its "pure form" so the w3schools website breaks it down, but their accuracy is very dependable.
