Hi,

This question has probably been asked a thousand times already, so my apologies for the repetition.

Can anyone point me to, or paste in some 'current' stats for browser resolutions being used to surf the web?

I've been searching and can only seem to find stats from 2003 or early 2004. Also took a look at my own stats but because of the subject matter and type of visitors of my sites the numbers may be skewed.

The reason I'm asking is my designs and usability don't do well with a liquid layout, so I'd like to swap out stylesheets based on screen resolution of the visitor - offering a narrow version and wide version of my site to accomodate them.

Thanks, and it's much appreciated if you can help.

I don't have a source for stats but on thing to consider is that just because someone has a high screen resolution it does not mean that a wider fixed width will be good for them - many people browse without their windows maximised or with something open which narrows their screen. Just something to consider.

[w3schools.com...]

You'll find screen resolutions have not changed all that much in recent times - at least 1024x768 and 800x600 still reign. However, there are many more at the larger resolutions - and be careful there. You cannot assume that a visitor with a really large screen resolution is running their browser window at full screen.

Thanks guys, I see what you mean.

My *theory* was to do centered layouts for the 2 most common resolutions. So those surfing at 1024 or greater wouldn't have a wide blank space on either side of the layout. I could also increase font sizes for the larger resolutions as well.

I'm on a 19" lcd at 1280 x 1024, and have a second 15" crt at 800 x 600 so I test layouts and usability on both. I've noticed that a site with a width of say, 760px has a really small font and enlarging the fonts throws off the design. It also seems 'uncomfortably narrow' on the larger resolution. Of course, a lot of visitors would notice the same things.

While everyone's surfing habits are different, there must be a way to please a larger percentage of them at least. Hence, my theory ;-)

Thanks for your input guys/gals. It's definitely helping with my decision.
