When opening multiple IE windows, IE uses ALL my memory. Why?

Whenever I use IE for a while and open and close multiple IE windows, IE hogs all my memory until no more is left and then I can't do anything but kill it and start over. Anyone know why?

For example if I am browsing and say have 4-5 windows open and I am constantly opening a 6th window and closing it repeatedly, IE will use say 300mb of memory, even if I close all IE windows but one it still uses all my memory. To the point where I can not open any new programs or windows and I can't even open the Windows Task Manager. What the heck is wrong with IE? Is this common?

I ran into something like this on Win98 - but I haven't seen it on my new XP machine. Then again, it was problems like this that pushed me to use Opera or Firefox for all but testing purposes.

Have you recently cleared your cache? That sometimes worked wonders for all kinds of buggy behavior.

IE bug. Seen it under 98 and NT. Not seen it under Win 2000 or XP.

Simplest solution - ditch IE for browsing and use it for testing only.

I could be mistaken but I seem to recall that closing all IE windows clears the fault temporarily.
