The Iceland overview has been updated with new statistics showing Icelanders as the world's most wired people - 60 percent of the total population is online.

Hey all. Got the post from rasmus. :-)

Most of the info pretty up to date.

Most used search engines are
[leit.is...] which uses a licenced infoseek engine (heavily modified)

and

[ha.is...] which uses the British Autonomy engine.

These are the biggest ones here. (with 99% coverage)

Haven't checked the other directories but for this one I know some:
Iceland on the Web
Language interface: English
Traffic volume: ?
Local language(s) required: no
Local domain(s) only: no
No. of categories allowed per site: ?
Search method: ?
Things that help ranking:
Local language: helpfull, but not necessarily
Local domain: none
Keyword in URL: none
Keyword in title: none
Keyword in description: (has to be about something Icelandic to get in)
Other: Uses a user rating system. Does not monitor multiple ratings. No spam blocker for someone to push their site to the top by repeatedly voting the highest for their web.

Hi Olaf
Big welcome to the board! Nice to have someone coming from the world's most wired people.
>has to be about something Icelandic to get in

:-)

Back when I was in school (long time ago), computer was a mandatory class. Started when I was about 15 to be mandatory and up.

Nowadays most schools have special made programs to teach the younger ones to get used to a computer in school incase there isnt one at home (which is at 95% of homes)

My younger daughter is age 5 and in kindergarden. Even there is one computer with educational games that kids can play in any time they want. And there is always someone using it. The teachers even have a sit down with 3 at a time every week to show them how to do stuff at computers.

My kid will be subcontracting me for unix/oracle stuff before the age of 10 :-)

Hej Oli - Welcome to the Iceland thread :)

As you can see we desperately needed some info on the search engine scene in Iceland. Thanks for helping out.

I wonder if leti.is will have to change to another technology hence infoseek has gone down the drain? Anyway with a 99%(!) converage it should be pretty straight forward promoting a site in Iceland.

How's the competition there? I did a few searches on leti and it seemed that there are not that many documents indexed.

No, both ha.is and leit.is index only pages with icelandic content.

They have a certain flag to switch to "!World Search" (Its the radio options above the input box) ( "leit á Íslandi" "á öllu Netinu" )

With the total population of 270K (including newborn, elderly and domestic pets) the target group is about 160K .

Those two search machines can easily keep up with the content indexing of pages produced in Icelandic.

Right now www.leit.is is the definite winner of usage. Mainly since it has plugged itself into most of the news sites.
