idling a Texas truck factory for 15 weekshttp://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=ath1Iy.S4k.o&refer=home
That is is the factory where Toyota builds the Tundra, a full size gas guzzling pickup truck, you know, the one that, in all their wisdom, they build to compete with the Ford F150, Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram.
Boy does Toyota know how to pick role models huh?
By the way, ya know that suspended Prius factory? That was originally suspposed to build the Highlander SUV and was only switched to the Prius when gas prices killed SUV sales.
So much for Toyotas "dedication" to econo cars.
Say, anyone know how many US state and/or federal taxpayer dollars went into subsidies for all these foreign owned auto factories?
Oh wait...here's a tidbit about that...
The state pledged $296 million in incentives to land the Toyota factory. That is less than the $336 million in incentives that Mississippi provided to the Japanese automaker Nissan, which opened a factory in Canton, outside Jackson, in 2003.http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/28/business/28auto.html
And that's just for two transplant factories.
If we can help the foreign automakers, why shouldn't we help the US automakers?
Funny though, to think that the automotive industry started in the US ...
Surely you don't mean the auto industry started in the US? The late German Carl Benz, amomg others, might look askance at that claim.
started with Henry Ford ....
....stating 'any colour as long as it's black'
Which refers to a period of time during the middle of the 19 year of production of the Model T Ford. During which time there were numerous other US automakers building and selling cars in a wide array of colors.
Ford sold millions of the Model T in those 19 years.

Yes, a lot of soccer moms and red necks who don't really need all that gas guzzliness also (used to) buy them. And a lot of other potential buyers (who need vehicles like that) are holding off their purchases because of the economy and gas prices. Perhaps it didn't end up being the best of timing for Toyota for that particular market segment. But it's kinda hard to compare one bad move by a car maker that hasn't shed workers in 24 years with the continuing blunders of the Big 3.

Now Edsel Ford, he's another matter entirely. We know he was successful because of the well known car 'The Edsel'.

Sorry for not being more specific. I'm not talking about those who might lay claim to various automotive inventions, but am referring to the foundations of the automotive sector in commercial terms as we know it today. That point begins with the breakthroughs and innovations in mass production brought about by Mr Ford. That's the point I was trying to make.
