I can understand a man wanting money, but this guy did such a shambolic job that it would have been nice to hear he was resigning, not holding out for the obvious sacking.
All his talk of taking responsibility etc. lol what a load of &*$%.
I am actually considering applying for the job as obviously the FA are prepared to pay out big time no matter how well you do. And it can't get much worse for England.
They would have probably fared better with the Rugby Players out there, at least there would have been more passion and determination.

Mclaren and his mentor Venables weren't up to the job and good riddance to them. The manager/coach is (by a long way)not main the problem with English football. These are the things that need to be sorted out before we start winning again.
1) Clear out the bungling amateurs who run the FA. My granny could do a better job than them and she's been dead for 20 years.
2)Stop paying the premiership players salaries that are way out of synch with their abilities. Most young men who earn £50 to £100K a week lack the motivation to do well and simply don't try hard enough. Crouch and possibly Beckham were the only ones who were any bloody use at all on Wednesday night. Also because they are all earning far more than their manager and an incredible amount more than the poor old referee they don't feel they should take instructions from these "social inferiors".
Lower Premiership salaries would also make it less attractive to foreign players and we might end up with a bigger pool of English players to choose from.
3)Encourage young players to develop skills and loose the "must win at all costs" mentality which has over excited parents shouting from the touchline and stressing out their kids, and grass roots team coaches picking only the bigger stronger lads and teaching them to lob the ball up front and hope for the best.
4)Force professional players to train more often so that they develop the skills they think they have.
5) The media must stop telling our sad and very average players that they are "World Class". They aren't and they proved it on Wednesday night. Beckham used to be but he has slowed up now so that he can no longer run on to passes and he has become the proverbial "one-trick pony" (free kicks). Players like Lampard, Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard etc look good playing in the premiership because they are supported by foreign world class players, when you take them out of that context and they have to rely on each other they look like a pub team. The media treatment of these players leads us to believe that we have a core of "best in the world" players and we are amazed that they haven't won anything since 1966, especially so when they fail to qualify for a major tournament. We shouldn't even be slightly surprised. These players have average skills, low intelligence and very little motivation. Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a fantasy world. They don't even sing the national anthem properly!
6) Bring back the home internationals every year and allow some other guest teams into the tournament so that we have more opportunities for new players and combinations of players to be tried out.

RonPK at least you guys are thru - anyway am feelin grumpy - might be becos have been pretending to be French whilst in Holland ;o) Carry on laughing at us - we deserve it!
I doubt they would ever do this, but I would like to see someone like Shearer in charge of the coaching, backed by every single manager of an English Premier League Team.
What I mean is that every manager of an English Premier League team would have some involvement in the England team.
Perhaps the group of managers should each vote on team / squad selection prior to every game, with a match strategy that the coach (in this example Shearer) implements.
Initially I thought about just the managers from the big 4 clubs, Arsenal, Liverpool Man U, and Chelski but it could equally be every manager from the EPL. Or just the English / British managers.
England seniors should play the England U21s more often as they should Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland.
What do you think?

Rarely do I see a post that reflects my own views 100%. This one does, and is so very well expressed. Thank you, old Honky.
The only thing I would add is that Rooney is the one truly world class player England have. Shame he can't stay fit for a whole season.
The additional point I would make is that the FA and English Football generally needs to decide just how important the national team is compared to the Premier League. At the moment the national team is treated like an afterthought, a necessary nuisance. Until that changes, the England football team will continue to underperform.
Also Alan Shearer has not shown any evidence that he could be a good manager. He may have been a good player but good players seldom make good managers. Different skills are required and far more intelligence. Imagine the "Spud Faced Nipper" (Rooney) as a manager.
Give the job to Redknap.
Really, I can't see why anyone would want the job. You only get to work with the team occasionally, league managers resent you for taking the players away and risking them to injury, the press are rooting around in your private life and are ready to pounce on the slightest whiff of scandal... and the public have unrealistic expectations of success.
Who needs it?
I am sure he would be better than Allardyce, Redknapp (who probably doesn't stand a chance now anyway).
It needs to be someone who has won at top level, and there does not seem to be many English managers who can claim that.
