What's going to be the score tonight?

Fabio Capello [news.bbc.co.uk]. Not bad, not bad at all. I mean not bad for England, although his salary isn't bad either: "reportedly worth £6m a year".

Yes, Capello it is. Will be very interesting to follow this and see how the England national team improve, because all their fans are sure to think they will win the next World Cup!

Still think it is a shame about JM but, that is history now.

I am off to drown my sorrows. I cannot believe my application did not even warrant a reply, nevermind an interview! :-(

Looks too much like Tommy Cooper to me.

I just watched Fabio's inaugural Press Conference on Sky News.

He's not quite as funny as Tommy Cooper (he needs to work on his timing)

Yes not a bad job if you can get it. Plus all the bonuses if you win tournaments, perhaps even a knighthood if he were to lead England to a World Cup victory.

So any bets on how long this guy will last, and whether he can accomplish anything with the team?

This is potentially a disaster for the FA. It's very risky hiring someone who cannot yet speak the language but paying them this amount of money for it too?

How does he communicate the "passione" if he hasn't got the vernacular? They are all saying that he gets success at every team he goes to but these have all been in Latin countries with club teams. He has never managed an international team far less one where he cannot speak the language.

We had a similar situation last year when the very highly regarded Paul le Guen (Good manager? Poor English) took over at Glasgow Rangers. Within six months he had reduced them to the worst state they had been in for many years. Many of the influential players and he fell out and he was off hire after six months.

I still think that you would have been better going for an Englishman. If the FA get this one wrong it will cost them millions and where would they go next?

Hmm....think the FA have paid off (sacked) a number of managers for the England squad......what's another couple more million to pay off another manager if he screws up. There's obviously a lot of revenue generated from the fans. Personally managers should be paid on performance. £500K if England has a good year.

Anyway he should hopefully last longer than McClaren.

I agree, which is why I was a little surprised they did not wait until Scolari was available after Euro 2008 as he at leasts speaks a little Ingleesh.

I believe even his trusted right and left hand men do not speak English!

Sorry but I do not see this. As mentioned before not one Englishman has proven himself at top International Level for club or country.

I do think England needs to desperately nurtur a future manager but if the top Premier league teams do not even want them why would England take the risk.

Until the day a top Englishman can prove himself at the highest levels of football then I do not think that would be a right decision.

Agreed. imho the money in football at the moment is ludicrous. Top players on around 200K / week maybe more for some if you include endorsements etc.

Even the lower players earn silly amounts.

Capello is getting what? 6 million / year for how many matches?! How many training sessions? It is crazy.

added:

But again, I do think a lot of blame has to be placed on the English media.

When JM was in the running the tabloids started digging up all sorts of stuff on him and his family that had absolutely nothing to do with football.

The media are quick to point the finger and sensatonalise but what has something that happened to a distant family member over 50 years ago got to do with the England job.

The media needs to take better control and stop digging for stuff just to sell papers / get viewers.
